How we test
A tax calculator is only useful if it's right. Here is how we check ours, our results next to independent figures, and what we know isn't perfect yet. Rates last checked 22 October 2026.
The process
- Rates from official sources. Every bracket, allowance and contribution rate comes from the tax authority or the law itself (HMRC, the IRS, the CRA, the National Tax Agency, the CPF Board and others), with PwC Worldwide Tax Summaries as a cross-reference. Each country's sources are listed on its page and on the methodology page.
- Results checked against independent figures. We compare our take-home pay with official and widely used calculators and published tables at several salaries, and investigate any gap. The checks below run automatically on every change: if one drifts, the site doesn't publish.
- Automated tests. Over 500 tests check that every calculator stays sensible across the whole range of salaries (take-home always rises with pay, rates stay between 0 and 100%), that caps and thresholds apply where the law says, and that tricky cases stay fixed.
- Corrections in the open. When we find a mistake, we fix it and list it in the changelog, including what it affected.

What we know isn't perfect
- Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia and Luxembourg run slightly heavy at low salaries, because some low-income tax credits aren't modelled yet.
- Quebec's provincial tax uses a simplified model (basic personal amount only); the federal side and QPP, EI and QPIP are complete.
- Local and city income taxes (New York City, Ohio and Pennsylvania municipalities, Maryland counties) aren't included in US figures.
- Everyone is modelled as a single employee with no dependants, no other income and standard allowances only. Family situations, pension contributions and special regimes for new arrivals change real figures.
- Japan: long-term care insurance (kaigo hoken, from age 40) isn't included, and a few prefectures use the Tokyo health-insurance rate where their own current rate couldn't be confirmed.
- Exchange rates are a fixed table, refreshed periodically, not live rates.
