Questions
How do I calculate my paycheck from an hourly wage?
Multiply your hourly wage by your hours, add overtime at one and a half times your rate, then add any tips or commission. That is your gross pay. Federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare and any state income tax come off it to give your take-home pay.
How much is $20 an hour every two weeks after taxes?
$20 an hour for 40 hours a week is $1,600 every two weeks before tax. In Texas, which has no state income tax, a single filer takes home about $1,369. The table on this page shows the figure for every state.
Are tips and commission taxed?
Yes. They count as wages, so income tax, Social Security and Medicare apply. If your tips qualify for the federal tips deduction (up to $25,000 a year for 2025 to 2028), your income tax can be lower than shown: that deduction and the federal overtime deduction aren't modelled here.
Why might my real paycheck differ?
This spreads the year's tax evenly across paychecks for a single filer taking the standard deduction. Your employer's withholding uses your W-4 and IRS tables, and 401(k), health insurance or other pre-tax deductions lower both your taxable pay and your take-home.
