Questions
How much of a bonus do you keep in Japan?
Usually 70 to 80% for a salaried employee. Social insurance takes about 15% (pension, health and employment insurance on the bonus), and income tax and next year's resident tax take most of the rest, more on a higher salary.
How is social insurance charged on a bonus?
On the standard bonus amount (標準賞与額), the bonus rounded down to the thousand yen. Pension is capped at ¥1.5 million per payment and health insurance at ¥5.73 million a year in total; employment insurance has no cap.
Why is less tax withheld from my bonus than this shows?
Payroll withholds income tax on a bonus at a rate set by your previous month's salary, and resident tax on the bonus is only charged the following year, spread over your monthly pay from June. This calculator shows the bonus's full cost over the year, after the year-end adjustment.
What does this assume?
A single employee under 40 (no long-term care insurance) in Tokyo's health insurance, no dependants and no deductions besides social insurance and the basic exemption.
