Gross salary converted at ECB reference rates, then taxed under each place’s own rules. Employee income tax and mandatory social security only. How we calculate

How income tax works in South Korea

Salary less the earned income deduction (70% of the first ₩5 million, then 40%, 15%, 5% and 2% in steps at ₩15 million, ₩45 million and ₩100 million, capped at ₩20 million), the ₩1.5 million basic deduction, and the employee's pension, health, long-term care and employment insurance premiums. Tax on the bands below is then reduced by the earned income tax credit (55% of the first ₩1.3 million of tax and 30% above that, limited to between ₩200,000 and ₩740,000 depending on salary). Someone who claims no special deductions gets a ₩130,000 standard credit instead of deducting health and employment premiums; the calculator uses whichever leaves less tax. Local income tax adds 10% of the income tax.

Employee contributions. National pension takes 4.75% of monthly pay (9.5% split with the employer), on pay between ₩400,000 and ₩6.37 million a month until June 2026 and between ₩410,000 and ₩6.59 million from July 2026. Health insurance takes 3.595% (7.19% split), capped at ₩4,591,740 a month for the employee. Long-term care insurance adds 13.14% of the health premium. Employment insurance takes 0.9% with no ceiling.

What this estimate simplifies

Shows the tax due for the year after year-end settlement, not the monthly withholding on a payslip, which comes from the simplified withholding table and is trued up each February. Assumes equal monthly pay all year and no non-taxable pay: a meal allowance of up to ₩200,000 a month is tax free if your employer pays one and gives you no meals, which would raise take-home. Leaves out dependants, the child credit, card spending, medical, education, rent and pension savings claims, which all lower tax. Rounding on payslips differs by a few won. Foreign workers who first start work in Korea by 31 December 2026 can instead choose a flat 19% on salary for up to 20 years, with no deductions or credits, plus 10% local income tax on that.

Every figure is for single resident employee under 60, no dependants, whole salary taxable, in the local currency. See the methodology for how we calculate and test.
